Malapascua, Cebu

I was on a diving mission when I scheduled a 4-day-long trip to Cebu in 2012. Gemmie Choa and I were already divers then so going to Malapascua was on top of our itinerary. More than the island's white sandy beach, Malapascua is known for its rich marine sanctuary.

Being the northernmost island in Cebu, going to Malapascua sure took much of our travel time. From the North Bus Terminal in Cebu City, we rode a van for 4 hours going to Maya Port. It took us another 45 minutes to go to the island itself via boat. We arrived past 2 pm and checked into Malapascua Beach and Dive Resort. Standard aircon room rate is P2,500 inclusive of breakfast. There are lots of resorts to choose from in the island but I liked the resort's approach to visiting divers. I, for one, easily felt at ease. The resort's English dive instructor, Chris, warmly welcomed and assisted us. Rate per dive is P1,400 exclusive of full gear equipment rental.

After 4 dives, I definitely had more reasons to love Malapascua. So amazed at how common it is to see mandarin fish mating during sunset at the lighthouse. The sleekness and majesty of the Thresher sharks were mind-blowing. Can't describe the satisfaction I felt in seeing them in their cleaning station. Observing them approach Monad Shoal one after the other made my blood rush in delight! It was in Malapascua that I saw sharks for the first time. Aside from reef sharks, we also spotted a bamboo shark in Gato. See also Malapascua, Cebu: Home of Thresher Sharks.
