Batad Rice Terraces, Banaue

Seeing rice terraces in the Philippines is very common especially in the northern part of the country. It was only in 2012 though that I was able to visit Batad Rice Terraces, one of the five rice terraces in Banaue declared as a World Heritage Site.

It was a work-related trip for Bawal ang Pasaway kay Mareng Winnie, a show hosted by Winnie Monsod in GMA News TV Channel 11. Our topic then was about Philippine tourism. (See also Laiya, Batangas) My crew and I covered the start of the Bachang project of a group of volunteer photographers. The project intended to revive the Ifugao bayanihan spirit in helping restore a part of Batad Rice Terraces. It was inevitably damaged through the years due to climate change and natural calamities.

We were provided with a van as our means of transportation going to Banaue. From Banaue, however, we need to rent a jeepney because of the rough road going to Batad. We then trekked up to the saddle point for almost an hour. After covering a short program in Batad Elementary School, we started our trek going to the rice terraces. What can I say---it was no doubt one of the toughest hikes I did in my life! I had no complaints on the view, which was picturesque all throughout the trek, but walking on the edge most of the time sure scared the hell out of me.

Seeing a part of Batad Rice Terraces damaged was heartbreaking though. Good thing I've witnessed how Filipino volunteers, both locals and non-locals, came together to revive the nation's bayanihan spirit. It was really inspiring to see my fellowmen reach for one rock after another and properly put it in place. It was definitely a shoot I was happy and proud to be a part of.
