Misamis Oriental: Diving in Mantangale

Ling and I scheduled our second out of town dive trip for 2017 on the second week of March. This was also, surprisingly, our first dive trip in Mindanao.

Why in Mantangale Dive Resort in Balingoan, Misamis Oriental? As a side trip to a wedding we’ve attended in CDO, I checked out dive sites near the area. Diving in Mantangale turned out to be one of the safest and most recommended. And the underwater pictures posted on the resort’s website was a big turn on.

Travel time to the resort from CDO proper was around two and a half hours. We had the leisure of sleeping in early on the night of our arrival. Had ourselves prepared for the dives ahead. It was slightly raining on our first diving day. We were able to dive in Lapinig Island’s dive site and the resort’s house reef known as Banaug Shoal.

Our dive master was also the resort’s owner, Sir Dodong. The dive trip was made even more special as Ling and I were offered to learn about Discover Enriched Air Nitrox, for free. We went as deep as 87 to 100 feet in our two dives. It was my first nitrox experience and Sir Dodong emphasized the nitrox MOD or the maximum operating depth we were allowed to dive. We were also shown how to calibrate or analyze from a tank’s normal air to a tank with Enriched Air Nitrox mix.

Two dives in Mantangale weren’t enough though. We were supposed to do 5 dives but the bad weather didn’t allow any more diving on our second day. For now, I’ll have to be content with the nudibranchs, whip coral shrimp, damsel fish with eggs and the various reef fishes we saw during our dives.
