The sea was calm when I arrived at the Biri Rock Formation in Biri Island, Northern Samar in November 2015. I was introduced to the local known myth of Berbenuta, the beautiful woman guarding the place. I was told that Berbenuta personally takes all negative remarks to heart. Like a threat, any negative observation will be met with ferocious waves.
It was a work-related trip for Bawal ang Pasaway kay Mareng Winnie, a show hosted by Winnie Monsod in GMA News TV Channel 11. The shows I handle for work are mostly issue-based. But sometimes I get lucky that the shoot’s itinerary includes visiting a tourist destination. Our topic is about political dynasty in Northern Samar, the 12th poorest province in the Philippines. Seeing the Biri Rock Formation was like a breath of fresh air---the perfect start to a 2-day long shoot.
There is only one daily flight to Catarman via Philippine Airlines, which is at 5:15 am. Likewise, there is only one flight back to Manila daily, scheduled at 8:30 am. Upon arrival, our team directly headed to the town of Lavezares, the jump-off point to Biri Island, which is 30 minutes away by van. From Catarman, one can also opt to ride a jeep, which will take around 30-45 minutes. The P45/pax motorboat ride going to Biri Island took us 45 minutes. Travel time can take longer depending on the day's weather condition.
After a 5-minute habal-habal ride costing P60 for 3 pax, the beauty of the Biri Rock Formation was upon us. The volcanic rock formation sculpted through time by the Pacific Ocean and San Bernardino Strait was breathtaking...considering it was 18-24 million years old! Hats off to the municipality of Biri for preserving it through the years. By the way, Dawn Zulueta and Richard Gomez’ ‘Iisa Pa Lamang’ film was shot here. Too bad, my Richard wasn’t with me during the trip. Hehe
We were all praises for Biri Island’s well-preserved rock formation. No doubt Berbenuta’s threat will forever remain a myth. ;P Aside from exploring the rock formation, travellers can also go diving and surfing in Biri. I'll definitely be back to dive in their marine sanctuary.
Travel tips: To reach the rock formation itself, one has to wade through knee-deep seawater. Bring sturdy footwear like booties to protect your feet from sharp, pointed rocks. Also, don’t forget to try Rimas, a local fruit that can only be found in Northern Samar.

Certified as a PADI rescue diver. Got my first compact camera in 2011. I was simply content then to just capture a glimpse of what I see during my dives. It was only last February 2014 that I fully maximized the use of manual macro settings.
My camera skills and knowledge are still a work in progress. Enjoy browsin’!
