As the pandemic dragged on and with just a month to go before 2021 ends, Ling and I didn’t expect to check off another adventure from our dive bucket list. We were all systems go when my original dive buddy, Gemmie, suggested exploring Subic after our dive trip to Anilao early November 2021. We enjoyed wreck diving in Coron, Palawan way back 2012 so we were looking forward to diving Subic Bay’s own wreck haven. It is actually long overdue as Subic is just a 2-3 hour drive away from the metro. Ling and I also planned the trip in time to celebrate our 11th wedding anniversary. Such a milestone surely merits a trip to remember!
We booked our stay with Johan’s Beach and Dive Resort. Their affordable, beachfront deluxe room pegged at P2,500 per night took our fancy. They also allow dogs in the premises so Gemmie and her parents were able to bring their pet, Coco, along. The overlooking view in the family room’s balcony was well worth the P2,500 spacious room. Nothing beats soaking in the sunset while enjoying a good ‘ol cup of coffee with great company.
Johan’s, by the way, is one of the longest operating dive centers in the Subic Bay area. Many of the known Subic Bay dive sites were discovered by Johan De Sadeleir himself, a Belgian national and long-time Philippine resident. Their P1,200 dive fee also clinched the deal for us. If you’ll rent dive equipment, just pay an additional P500 per dive. There are around 30 dive sites within Subic Bay, most of which are World War II Japanese and American wrecks such as cargo ships, patrol boats, landing ships, antique steam ships, submarines and airplanes. Certified as a PADI rescue diver. Got my first compact camera in 2011. I was simply content then to just capture a glimpse of what I see during my dives. It was only last February 2014 that I fully maximized the use of manual macro settings.
