Boracay: An Unexpected Underwater Splendor

It was a trip booked at the beginning of 2016---a Philippine Airlines promo fare to Boracay Ling and I couldn’t resist at the BDO Travel Sale last January. Our Boracay trip in August also turned out to be our 6th dive destination for the year. Not at all bad as we’ve long been planning to see what Boracay has to offer...not just on plain sight as I've been to Boracay twice already but importantly, what's waiting for me underwater. We’ve had acquaintances that had been certified in the island and there have been dive spot recommendations that really piqued our interest. We went diving with New Wave Divers, at a rate of P1,800 per dive inclusive of dive gear rental. It is P400 cheaper if you have your own gear with you.

Did a total of 4 dives in our 3-day stay in Boracay. I was finally reacquainted with my wide-angle fisheye lens after two previous dive trips focused on macro. Our expectations weren’t as high but diving in Boracay didn’t actually disappoint. Like what our dive master said in our dive briefing---we really never know what we’ll see underwater. And indeed, we had our share of small surprises!

On our first dive in Balinghai dive site, we luckily chanced upon a hawksbill turtle. Common nudibranchs abound in Angol Point. And yes, seeing that huge crocodile flathead was totally astonishing. A school of bat and spadefish was the highlight of our 3rd dive in Camia shipwreck.

3 dives in Boracay could have been enough but our dive master’s invitation to do Yapak the following day was just so tempting. As early as 7:15 am, we were on our way to the dive site just before the tides were expected to rise. It was a deep wall dive with giant trevally and tuna’s swimming in the blue. Yapak was also teeming with schools of reef fish. Really quite a view!
