Mt. Tagapo, Rizal

After climbing Mt. Pulag in May 2010, we went up Mt. Tagapo in Talim Island, Binangonan, Rizal two months after. It is a minor climb with 2 out of 9 level of difficulty. We were with our mountaineering group, Horizon Extreme Adventure Team or HEAT.

It was HEAT’s first ever surprise climb. We were just informed what to bring and where to meet. Everyone had his or her own speculation. The surprise just became clear upon arrival at Binangonan Port. As we were headed to Talim Island in Bgy. Janosa via passenger boat, there was no question that Mt. Tagapo was our climb’s surprise destination right at the heart of Laguna Lake. The island is teeming with bamboo and it is the locals' main source of livelihood hence the name Tagapo---from the Tagalog word "taga" or to chop. Jump-off point is near the barangay hall. Hikers need to register first in the barangay before heading off.

It took us 3-4 hours to reach the campsite. We took our time and enjoyed the uphill trail. Pitched our tents and prepared for dinner. We had our socials while staying inside our tents because of the sudden rainfall. I can still remember everyone sharing entertaining knock, knock jokes and Papa Jack quotable quotes.

Took the 15-minute trail going to the peak before breakfast the following day. The 360-degree coastal view was fantastic! I was wondering about the open pit we saw at Mt. Tagapo's summit and it turned out that there is a rumored treasure on the mountain. Maybe someone lucky has found it. Or maybe not.

Travel tip: Keep in mind that there are hourly ferry trips to and from Talim Island in Bgy. Janosa. First trip daily is at 6 am and last trip is usually at 9:30 pm.
