Coron, Palawan: World War II Wrecks And More

I've read somewhere that the things we are passionate about are not random. They are---more often than not---our calling or perhaps, meant to be our lifelong hobby. I found mine in 2009 during my first trip to Coron, Palawan. It inspired me to get certified as a PADI Open Water Diver in 2010. I came full circle when I levelled up my PADI certification to advance in November 2011 in time for my return to Coron in January 2012. And I wasn't disappointed! Diving in Coron is definitely way better than snorkeling!

Was able to do 6 dives. One day was for wreck diving in Japanese army auxiliary cargo ships namely Olympia Maru, Morazan Maru and a submarine hunter wreck known as East Tangat. My adventurous self enjoyed passing through cargo openings...maneuvering from one deck to another while imagining what could have happened centuries ago. It was quite eerie to see the salvaged engines of World War II shipwrecks right before my eyes. Seeing traces of boilers left in the engine room were amazing and at the same time unnerving. After exploring wrecks, the next day was spent reef diving in Barracuda Lake, Twin Peaks and Siete Picados. Diving in Barracuda Lake which is brackish water (a combination of fresh and salt water), was one for the books! Wasn't able to see any barracuda though. But we got lucky seeing a pawikan during our dive in Twin Peaks.

Booked our dives with Coral Bay Dive Center as it was the cheapest dive shop in the area. The package cost for 3 dives including lunch is P2,500. Cheaper by P500 compared to the rest. Hope their price didn't change though.

About Mona

Certified as a PADI rescue diver. Got my first compact camera in 2011. I was simply content then to just capture a glimpse of what I see during my dives. It was only last February 2014 that I fully maximized the use of manual macro settings.
