Our February 2018 long-weekend adventure up Mt. Pigingan was an opening climb Ling and I have been looking forward to. The chosen destination was an out-of-the-blue suggestion as we have recently seen Pigingan summit pics on Pinoy Mountaineer’s FB page.
It was a reunion climb of sorts. A get-together with Jeff, a core member in our mountaineering group, Horizon Extreme Adventure Team or HEAT, and whom I met way back 2008. He went along with his wife, who marked Mt. Pigingan as her first climb. We were reunited with my brother-in-law’s office mate, Van with her hubby, whom we met in our Mt. Timbak climb last 2017. After Timbak, it was great to climb again with Ling’s sister, Tna, brother-in-law, Sid, along with our 4-yo niece, Dabby.
To reach Pigingan’s jump-off in Bgy. Balocloc, we rented a van worth P14,500. We were 11 in the group. Hikers can opt to take a bus bound for Baguio but since it was a long-weekend, bus tickets were sold out a week early. Via van, we no longer needed to rent a jeep from Baguio to the jump-off which is 1.5 to 2 hours away. After breakfast, we started trek at exactly 8 am.
Mt. Pigingan is a borderline major climb with 4 out of 9 difficulty. It took us 6 hours to reach the campsite by 4 pm. We had an hour’s worth of lunch break at the junction. It has been one of my longest treks and though quite challenging, it delivered one of the best views I’ve seen in my lifetime. The scenic Cordillera mountain range was just breath-taking. The view was well worth all the unli-assaults up the campsite.
Though hiking in the Cordillera region is preferable for its cool weather, the hot temperature we experienced was just unusually draining. But still prep for jackets because it can get really cold at night up until morning. At past 5 am the following day, we started our trek up the summit. What I experienced during our knife-edge ascent was just knee buckling. I literally shouted my heart out when I conquered my fear and monumentally reached the summit. Check out all pics to see the grandeur that is Mt. Pigingan.

Certified as a PADI rescue diver. Got my first compact camera in 2011. I was simply content then to just capture a glimpse of what I see during my dives. It was only last February 2014 that I fully maximized the use of manual macro settings.
My camera skills and knowledge are still a work in progress. Enjoy browsin’!
