Asipulo, Ifugao

I was able to explore Asipulo, Ifugao in 2009 for a work-related trip for DOQmentaries, a show hosted by Rhea Santos, Connie Sision and Pia Arcangel in QTV Channel 11. In my line of work as a segment producer, I travel with my cameraman and assistant cameraman. We have our van as our own means of transportation and the assigned driver leads the way. It took us 8 hours to go to the location.

The topic for DOQ's episode then was about our crowning glory---our hair. We went to Asipulo to shoot how the early Ifugao men and women give value to their manes. For Ifugao women back then---having long, gorgeous black hair are signs of status and sophistication. Wearing beaded hair ornaments also indicate high-class status. For Ifugao men, on the other hand, certain rituals have to be performed before cutting their hair. Like offering a native chicken for instance and praying to the gods. This has been the practice in the early days to chase off bad spirits and bring luck to their everyday life.

I always enjoy shoots like these because aside from learning local culture and practices, I also get to enjoy the majestic view along the way. See also Batad, Banaue, Tinglayan, Kalinga and Zamboanga.
