Because once is almost always never enough...I had to return to Camiguin to see its majestic White Island in 2009 with my Sumasabog na Kalan or SNK friends. The 2007 trip with my family was already unforgettable in itself. Family bonding with my relatives from Cagayan De Oro and Balikbayan uncle from America. Unfortunately, my mom was scared of riding small outriggers that we weren't able to go to the island.
It takes a 1-hour ferry ride from Balingoan Port in Misamis Oriental to go to Benoni Wharf in Camiguin. In both trips, we were toured by Mang Roger, a known local guide. The tour package costs P2,200, exclusive of entrance fees. We were able to visit the 250-meter high Katibawasan Falls. The Phivolcs Observatory overlooking Mt. Hibok Hibok, one of the active volcanoes in the Philippines. Camiguin, by the way, is known as the "island born of fire" because of its volcanic eruptions that helped shape the province. The Sunken Cemetery, for instance, sank underwater during the Spanish era due to the 1871 Mt. Vulcan eruption that consequently destroyed the entire capital. The Old Guiob Church ruins in Catarman is also one of the remaining structures left standing after the disastrous Mt. Vulcan eruption. On a lighter note, we dropped by the Bura Soda Water Park to check out the resort's spring water that smells and tastes like soda. And lastly, spent most of our time in the Ardent Hot Spring where we enjoyed a relaxing dip. We also coincidentally checked into the same resort, Paras Beach Resort. Overnight family loft room rate for 5-6 pax is P1,030/person. It already includes breakfast and a trip to the White Island.
Seeing the sunken cemetery was the highlight of my first trip. Visitors can opt to ride a banca going to the cemetery's remaining marker, a giant cross, for the cost of P20/one way. We didn't ride one though, we were content just appreciating the view.
There is no question that seeing the White Island up close was the best part of my 2009 return. People are only allowed to go there in the morning when it is low tide. We took our time lounging in the pristine sandbar and of course, snapped as much pictures as we can! Wasn't surprised to see locals selling handmade souvenirs in the island.

Certified as a PADI rescue diver. Got my first compact camera in 2011. I was simply content then to just capture a glimpse of what I see during my dives. It was only last February 2014 that I fully maximized the use of manual macro settings.
My camera skills and knowledge are still a work in progress. Enjoy browsin’!
