Bacolod City

In the past years as a segment producer, I’ve done more than a dozen stories around Visayas. But as much as I wanted to visit ‘The Ruins’ in Bacolod City, it is either there wasn’t enough time or it was not along the way. With a twist of fate last September 2019, however, I was finally able to visit one of my bakit-list travel destinations.

Our target shoot locations weren’t directly in Bacolod City. But Cadiz and Himamaylan in Negros Occidental are both accessible from the city center. Our team stayed in Bacolod City’s Go Hotel as it is our network’s accredited accommodation in the area. We managed to spend a day in Cadiz and Himamaylan respectively to complete all the elements needed for the three stories, including travel time to and from the city proper.

On our last day before flying back to Manila, my researcher and I were able to visit ‘The Ruins.’ Go Hotel offers a free shuttle to and from ‘The Ruins’ so it was just our luck. The remains of the ancestral home of the family of the sugar baron, Don Mariano Ledesma Lacson, were stunning. The mansion was built as a memoir of love after his wife died during the birth of their eleventh child in the early 1900’s. Built and inspired by Italian architecture, it was burned down by Filipino guerillas to prevent invasion of the site by Japanese forces during the World War 2. Now branded as the Taj Mahal of Talisay, it was an honor to witness the glory of what has been. Entrance fee for adults is pegged at P100, P50 for students and P20 for children.

When you’re in Bacolod, don’t miss going on a gastronomical adventure as well. Visit the Manokan Country lined-up with inasal restos where you can eat Bacolod’s renowned chicken. We ate lunch at Nena's because Aida's inasal got out of stock early. Craving fresh and affordable seafood? Diotay’s eatery is highly recommended. It is a dampa-style resto where you can choose your preferred seafood and specify how you want it to be cooked. For some grilled goodness with a homey ambiance, try Aboy’s.
